Edward Sheltrown

February 1, 1915 — August 29, 2008

Edward Sheltrown, 93, of West Branch, passed away Friday evening, August 29, 2008, in the comfort of his own home with family members at his side. Ed was the first born son of Clyde and Ollie (Priddy) Sheltrown on February 1, 1915, in West Branch. Ed grew up in West Branch and Standish. He lived with his grandparents, Edward and Myrtle Sheltrown so he could attend high school and graduated from Standish High School in 1935. He married Helen Linseman in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, on October 8, 1938. This October Ed and Helen would have celebrated their 70th anniversary. After two years helping his grandparents with a gas station and owning a car dealership, he and Helen came home to West Branch to work the family farm. From that union were born six children: Dale (Lori) Sheltrown, Deonne (Don) Goodrow, Joel (Teresa) Sheltrown, Glenda (Steve) Neumann, Van Sheltrown and Debbie Hall, and Robin Sheltrown all residing in West Branch. Except for brief periods of time, they have lived in Edwards Township all of their lives. Ed’s passion for politics led to what he considered his greatest accomplishment—holding the position of Edwards Township supervisor for 32 years. The community was so satisfied with his performance in this role that Ed ran unopposed each election. Ed and Helen’s sons carried on the tradition of political involvement with Dale and Joel serving consecutively as state representative for the 103 District, and Van serving on the Ogemaw County Road Commission. Besides being a farmer for a number of years, Ed also owned and operated Sheltrown John Deere Equipment. After retiring from the store, he and Helen purchased a place in Wauchula, Florida, where he enjoyed spending the winters for the past 14 years. Ed loved to go to the coffee shop and visit with his neighbors. He also loved pheasant hunting in South Dakota and deer hunting. Ed is survived by his wife, Helen, six children, twelve grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, his sisters, Lillian Wade and Leona Hayes, and his brothers, Clyde and Rudy Sheltrown. He was predeceased by his parents, his sisters, Myrtle Garner and Doris Sheltrown, and many other family members. A special thank you is sent out to his Home Health Care nurse, Bonnie, and aides, Denise and Jan. Also a special thank you to Heartland Hospice and nurse, Chris, for helping Ed stay at home till the end. Visitation will be held Sunday, August 31, 2008 from 2-8 PM at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch. The funeral will be held Monday September 1, 2008 at 11:00AM at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Edwards Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to AuSable Valley Community Mental Health Services, 511 Griffin Street, West Branch, MI 48661 or the charity of the donor’s choice.
