He grew up and spent most of his life in Ann Arbor, Michigan. After high school, he joined the Army and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. Gary married Pam (Osterhout) Nicholson on February 11th, 1994 at the Bali Chapel in Las Vegas. Gary owned and operated his paint and wallpaper installation business until 1996 when he opened Colby's Decorating Center in Westland, Michigan, selling paint and wallpaper. In 1997, he became the proud father of a beautiful baby boy, Christopher. In 2002, Gary and his son moved to Saint Helen to begin to build the house that became the family's home in December of the same year. He owned and operated USA Borders and Murals, an internet based wallpaper store until his death. In 2005, he was Treasurer of the St. Helen Bluegill Festival and in 2006, he volunteered his time to the festival. Survivors include his wife, Pamela Colby; his son, Christopher; his brothers, James (Carol) Colby and David (Linda) Colby; his sisters, Phyllis (William) Braun and Barbara (David) Welton; his mother-in-law, Rita Osterhout; his brother-in-laws, George (Debra) Osterhout, Curtis (Sheila) Osterhout and Richard (Karri) Osterhout; his nieces and nephews and many friends. Memorial contributions can be made to the Christopher Colby Education Fund at First Bank in Saint Helen, Michigan. Preceded in death by his father, Raymond N. Colby; his mother, Dorothy Colby; and his father-in-law, George C. Osterhout
