George Delos Snyder Jr.

George Delos Snyder, age 91, passed away at his home, August 27, 2021.

George was born June 17, 1930 to George and Marion (Herendeen) Snyder in Beaverton Michigan. He lived his childhood in various small, Michigan communities including Tawas, Prudenville, Gladwin and Harrison. George graduated from Harrison High School, joining the Navy in the summer of 1948, where he learned his life-long vocation as an electrician. George received an Honorable discharge, Electrician’s Mate, on the eighth of July, 1952.

Returning from the Navy, he was introduced to the love of his life, Helen Wangler, marrying October 27, 1956. Eventually the young couple built a permanent home in Auburn, Michigan, raising four children.

George worked in industrial construction as a member of IBEW Local 692 for over 65 years. In his career, he worked at automobile plants in Flint, Michigan as well various projects for Dow Chemical and Dow Corning. He also worked at Consumer Power’s nuclear plant where he was the first General Foreman hired for the position.

Upon retirement, George and Helen moved to Lupton Michigan, where he built his dream home overlooking Henderson Lake, spending winters in Florida and summers in the Northern Michigan he loved.

George is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Helen Snyder, his children and their spouses, George (Beth) Snyder, Craig (Kevin Panter) Snyder, Lynn (Jon) Hoerauf and Steve (Jeanette) Snyder. In addition, George has seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild. Also surviving are siblings, Shirley Wilson, Carmen (Moe) St. Onge, Linda Thurlow and Robert (Mitsue) Snyder as well as many nieces and nephews.

George is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Deloris Nelson and Jeanne DeGuise as well hunting buddies and dear friends, Victor Nelson and Keith Winslow.

George was a lifelong sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and camping with his family. He traveled throughout the United States, including trips to Hawaii and Alaska. George had a quick wit and a keen intellect. His love for his family, especially his love for his wife, Helen, is his legacy.

Visitation will begin at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 p.m. Jon Hoerauf will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in West Branch with veteran honors.
