Harriet Lucille Doran

May 30, 1935 — January 31, 2016

Harriet Lucille (Harrington) Doran, age 80, passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2016, in Grand Rapids, MI, peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by her loving family.

Harriet was born on May 30, 1935, to Hugh and Olive Harrington in Hetherton, MI, and lived in the West Branch, Michigan area most of her adult life before retiring to Florida. She grew up in the Johannesburg, Michigan, area, graduating from high school there in 1953, and then later from Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA, in 1957. Harriet married Edward Martin Peter Doran from Braddock, PA, on August 30, 1956, after meeting at college. Harriet was an elementary school teacher in West Branch and Rose City, Michigan, for nearly 30 years, and is remembered well for her singing and playing the piano for her kindergarten students all those years in the classroom, while teaching them the basics of life as a loving teacher. As an accomplished artist for many years, her paintings of landscapes, red barns in the West Branch area, as well as her favorite “Hat’s Attics” paintings, are found all over northern Michigan and beyond.

Anyone who came into contact with her knew her love for her husband and children, her friends, music, church, and for her Lord, Jesus Christ. She was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church nearly all of her life and loved singing from the Psalter, especially Psalms 23, 95, 98 and 100.

Harriet is survived by her sons, Dan (Chris) of Hastings, MI, Dave (Tami) of Ada, MI, Sean (Mary) of Williamsburg, MI, Bill of Caledonia, MI; one daughter, Jennifer (Chris) Smusz, of St. Joseph, MI, and one daughter-in-law, Judy Cizauskas, of Middleville, MI; her brothers, Harold Harrington of New Albany, PA, Gordon Harrington, formerly of Rose City, MI.; Milton Harrington of Rose City, MI;, and her sister Elsie Harrington Mastorovich of Murrysville, PA, as well as grandchildren, Timothy, Eric, Casie, Kyle, Michael, Donovan, Christian, Erin, Shawn, Caelan; and many nieces and nephews. Harriet is preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Olive Harrington, her husband, Edward Martin Doran, her sister Evelyn May Harrington Felker, and a brother, Donald Paul Harrington.
