Hazel M. Butler

Hazel Butler passed away peacefully Sunday, August 21, 2011 at Bortz Health Care in West Branch. Hazel was born December 23, 1919 in West Branch one of 9 children born to Anna (Yantz) and John Robinson. Hazel was born and raised in Ogemaw Township. She graduated from West Branch High School in 1938 and graduated from Ogemaw County Normal School in 1939. Hazel taught at Pleasant Hill School and then served in the Waves (Navy). After the Navy, she worked in Detroit before returning to West Branch and marrying Charles Butler. Hazel returned to teaching at Pleasant Hill School. She was an active local government official working as Ogemaw Township Treasure for over 50 years. She was first sworn in as treasure in 1953. Hazel is survived by her children, John (Patricia) Butler and Renee (Tom) Ryland both of West Branch, grandchildren; Tracey Ryland and Anthony (Mary Jo) Ryland both of West Branch, Michael (Jesse) Butler of Stockbridge and Melissa (Blaine) VanPelt of Kingsley, great-grandchildren; Corbin Ryland and Paityn and Blaine VanPelt. Also surviving is her sister Helen Robinson. She is preceded in death by her husband Charles on May 2, 2010, 7 brothers and sisters. Visitation at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will begin on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Dan Stoneback will officiate. Memorial Contributions may be made to Bortz Health Care or Heartland Hospice, both of West Branch. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of Bortz Health Care and Heartland Hospice.
