John N. Maxwell

John Nathaniel Maxwell, age 96, passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2021 at Tawas MediLodge in Tawas, MI. He was born on August 20, 1924 in Grayling to Marlin and Celia (Crapo) Maxwell. John lived in Hale since 1948, formerly of St. Clair Shores. On April 17, 1948, he married Gloria Lauer in West Branch. John graduated from Prescott High School and enlisted in the United States Navy serving in World War II as a Gunnersmate 2nd Class. John worked on his family farm before moving downstate to work for Chrysler. He retired from Chrysler in 1984 and moved back home to enjoy his retirement.

John was a member of the Masonic Lodge where he served as the Grand Master in 2003 and was awarded Mason of the Year. He was also a member of the Boy Scouts in Metamora, Shriner’s, “Scottish Rights” and the Hillbillies Club. He enjoyed cutting wood, being outdoors and in the barn, hunting, trapping, fishing and ice skating.

John is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Gloria Maxwell of Hale; daughters in law, Karen Maxwell of Hale and Donna Maxwell of Clinton Township, MI; grandchildren, Jay Maxwell of Sterling Heights, MI, Scott (Debbie) Maxwell of Metamora, MI, Wendy (Earnest) Stewart of Roseville, MI, Paul Brady of Hale, Tracy Maxwell of Shelby Township, MI and Daniel (Lauren) Maxwell of West Branch; great grandchildren, Angelica, MacKenzie, Carissa, Abigail and Jensen; sisters, Martha Bobb and Dora Burt; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, sons, Michael and David Maxwell, and sister, Ida Cowsert.

Visitation at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will begin on Thursday, January 14, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, January 15, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with a Masonic Service. Burial will follow at Logan Township Cemetery with veteran honors.

Visitation will be held with precautions, due to the current pandemic, limiting the number of attendees at a given time.
