John Philip Hetzel

John Philip Hetzel, age 69, passed away on Monday, October 11, 2021 at MidMichigan Medical Center in West Branch. He lived in Alger for the past 39 years, formally of Detroit.

John was born on July 4, 1952 in Eastlake, OH to Norman and Virginia (Jakala) Hetzel.

On November 13, 1976 he married the light of his life, Donna Frayer in St. Clair Shores, MI. Their marriage of almost 45 years was filled with an unfaltering love.

John served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1969 - 1972. He was self-employed as a carpenter working in construction and enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, BBQ’s and family gatherings, and had an unending faith in God. John’s children and grandchildren were the other lights in his life. He loved his big family and was best known for his silly faces and being the candy giver to all kids. He will be truly missed and so loved by all.

John is survived by his loving wife Donna Hetzel (Frayer) his 7 children, John Hetzel, Renea Hetzel, Michael Hetzel (Kelly), Maria Lacey (Joe), Theresa Hetzel (Kent), Andrew Hetzel, Kevin Hetzel (Samantha) 14 grandchildren, his sister Denise (Hetzel) Vasicek and his nieces and nephews.

John is preceded in death by his brothers Thomas and Norman Hetzel and his stepdad Robert Ridings.

The funeral service will be held at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch on Friday, October 15, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. with visitation starting at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Edwards Township Cemetery with Veteran honors. Father Emmanuel Finbarr will officiate.
