Murtin M. Steward

August 7, 1921 — September 13, 2006

Murtin M. Steward, age 85, passed away at Bay Medical Center on Wednesday evening, September 13, 2006. Murtin was born on August 7, 1921 in Puxico, Missouri, to Jesse Columbus Steward and Lulah Venita Maddox. After High School Murtin enlisted into the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and was later drafted into the Army during WWII. During his time in the Army Murtin's unit marched through Italy, France, and into Germany freeing many from oppression and liberating two death camps. After the war Murtin moved to Pontiac, MI, working for General Motors as an assembly-man and fork lift operator in shipping and receiving. In 1966 Murtin married Geraldine (Brindley) and since retirement they made their home between their residences in Waterford, MI, West Branch, MI, and Homasassa, FL. Murtin enjoyed classic cars, country music, traveling, hunting, and fishing and had many stories connected to his interests. He also enjoyed farming, gardening, and cooking. Murtin is survived by his wife, Geraldine, step-children, Terry (Gerrie) Bejamin, Larry (Carol) Benjamin, and LuAnn (David) Zettle all of West Branch. Step-grandchildren, Justin Benjamin, Geran Zettle, Ganae' Zettle, and Robert Redlawsk. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Preceding Murtin in death is sister Zelma Patton, and three brothers, Alvie, Thurman, and Carroll. Visitation will begin Saturday, September 16, 2006 from 1-9 P.M. at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 17, 2006 at 2:00 P.M. at Steuernol & Mclaren Funeral Home in West Branch with visitation prior from 10-2 P.M. On Wednesday, September 20, 2006 a graveside service will be held by Watkins & Sons Funeral Home in the Rock Hill Cemetery in Puxico, Missouri at 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers a memorial donation may be made to the VFW Post #3775, West Branch, MI in memory of Murtin. The family would like to thank all Murtin's caregivers for their support and compassionate care.
