Violet Ruth Nelson

Violet Ruth (Matthews) Nelson passed away July 4, 2010 at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Standish, she was born one of eight children on May 1, 1923 to John Edgar and Myrtle (Rentschler) Matthews. She was a lifetime resident of Ogemaw County. Violet married Robert Nelson on April 6, 1943. Bob worked in the oil fields most of his life and also farmed. Surviving family include her two sons Victor (Carol) Nelson, and Duane (Karen) Nelson both of West Branch. Five Grandchildren Mindy Cottingham, Marty England, Lynette Bryan, Amy Faber, and Chris Nelson. Nine Great Grandchildren Donnie Cottingham, Brianna Mahler, Eric Cottingham, Jennifer Cottingham, Rand Faber, Isabelle Violet Faber, Kole England, William Alan Nelson, Kylee England. Violet was preceded in death by her husband Robert Nelson in 1990. Five sisters Beatrice Winters, Gladys Lowe, Clara Twining, Marjorie Atherton, Hazel Matthews; and two brothers Wesley Matthews, and Art Matthews. Violet was active in her church The Community of Christ, recently president of the Sunshine Club and volunteered for many agencies. She was well known for her knitting and crocheting, she has made hundreds of mittens for the children of the Christmas House, as-well-as donating hundreds of lap robes for nursing homes. She was well known as “Grandma”. Grandma, we love you and will surely miss you here but know you are in a far better place. Visitation at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will begin Wednesday, July 7, 2010 from 5-9 PM. The funeral will be held at the funeral home Thursday, July 8, 2010 at 2:00PM. High Priest Richard Hamilton will officiate.
