Alfred George Evans, age 81, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2024, in West Branch.
Alfred was born in Detroit to Alfred and Cecelia (Skelnik) Evans. Originally from Warren, he moved to West Branch after retiring from his position as lead maintenance manager of the Sterling Heights Stamping Plant.
Al was an Army veteran, having served in the Vietnam War from 1969-1970. He was a member of both the VFW and the American Legion.
After retiring to West Branch, he became involved in several community groups, serving on the boards of the AuSable Mental Health, the 911 Board, and the West Branch Township Board of Review. The Ogemaw County Humane Society also benefited greatly from Al’s love of animals: he was active in the initial stages of building the shelter by donating money and time, and he continued his support until his passing.
In the late 70’s Al met Audrey Kocher, who became his much-loved constant companion for the next forty-six years. Together they traveled extensively and shared many adventures and interests.
Described by others as a kind and friendly man, Al found joy in serving and helping others, always with his terrific smile. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed time with his friends. His legacy will be long remembered, and his was a life well lived.
Al is survived by his sister, JoAnn Rathburn of West Branch, nephew Douglas (Michelle) Rathburn of Mohall, N.D., niece Linda Rathburn of East Detroit, stepdaughter Cindy Kocher of Hale, great nephew and niece Alfred Rathburn and Heather (Curt) Wallowing Bull, both of Minot, N.D., and Antoinette, Cecelia, and Lilith, daughters of Heather and Curt Wallowing Bull.
He was preceded in death by his beloved companion, Audrey Kocher, his parents Alfred and Cecelia Evans, brother-in-law Donald Rathburn, and nephew Donald Rathburn II.
Visitation for Al will begin Thursday, May 16, 2024 from 5-7pm at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch. His Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, May 17, 2024 at 12:00pm with Father Emmanuel Finbarr officiating.
