Colene Jo Nichols, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at MyMichigan Medical Center in Midland, Michigan, at the age of 79. Born on September 27, 1946, in Traverse City, Michigan, Colene was a beacon of warmth and creativity throughout her life, touching the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. She lived in the Prescott, MI since 2018.
Colene dedicated 30 years of her professional life to the Ford Motor Company, where she worked diligently as a sewing machine operator. Her commitment to her craft was matched only by her passion for community service. As a proud member of the VFW in Shelby Township, Michigan, she embodied the spirit of giving back. She also held the esteemed position of president of the Rifle River Quilting Guild, where she brought together fellow enthusiasts at the Knights of Columbus Hall to share in their love for quilting and fellowship.
Colene's interests extended well beyond her career and family. She found joy in quilting and crafting, relished the beauty of nature, and had a deep appreciation for horses. Every moment spent outdoors was a precious reminder of the simplicity and beauty of life, and she cherished every opportunity to be with family and friends.
On February 14, 1986, she married Craig Nichols in Washington Twp, MI.
A devoted wife and mother, Colene cherished her family above all. She is survived by her beloved husband, Craig Nichols; her son, Phillip (Nancy) Sopha; and her daughter, Jodie (Jody Mihal) Sopha. Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren: Richard Stevenson, Noah Mihal, Justin Sopha, Michael Sopha, and Ashley Sopha, as well as numerous great-grandchildren who brought her endless joy. She also leaves behind her brother, Gregory (Sue) Mills, her step-brother, Rex (Bonnie) Dame, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins who will remember her fondly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ervin and Wilma (Stowe) Mills, and her dad, Cleland Dame.
A visitation in her honor will be held at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch, MI on February 25, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Rea Family Animal Shelter in West Branch.
Colene’s warmth, laughter, and creativity will forever be remembered, and her impact on those around her will continue to resonate in the hearts she touched.
