Evelyn Adele Smith, born on August 25, 1934, in Detroit, MI, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026, in St. Helen, MI at the age of 91. Evelyn was a cherished mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness that will be deeply missed. She lived in St. Helen since 1995, formerly of New Boston, MI.
Evelyn dedicated her career to helping others, first as an x-ray technician, and later as a school bus driver for the New Boston Huron District, where she brought joy and safety to countless children during her years of service. A graduate of Dearborn High School in 1952, her life was a testament to hard work and unwavering commitment.
She was united in marriage to Malcolm Smith on April 26, 1957, in Dearborn, MI.
Evelyn’s zest for life was evident in her many passions. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, and spending time outdoors, particularly on golf cart rides, boating, and indulging in her love for hunting and fishing. Evelyn also cherished moments spent golfing, quilting, sewing, and playing Chinese checkers, hobbies that brought her joy and connected her with friends and family.
She is survived by her two daughters, Janice Smith of Milan, MI, and Karen (Richard) Dutcher of Washington, MI. Her grandchildren, Taylor (Jon) Hoffman of Comstock Park, MI, and Nicole (Austin) Armstrong of Armada, MI, also carry forward her spirit and warmth. Additionally, Evelyn leaves behind many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors who were touched by her kindness and cherished her presence.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm, alongside her beloved parents, Lowell and Helen (Brockmiller) Yates, and her brothers, David and Clark Yates. Their memories remained in her heart, shaping the nurturing spirit she extended to those around her.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Evelyn's life at her funeral service on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 2:00 PM, to be held at the First United Methodist Church, 2490 State Rd. in West Branch, MI, with visitation starting at 12:00 PM. Pastor Michelle Forsyth will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital and Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Her memory will forever be a source of inspiration and comfort to those who knew her.
