Gale Lee Wymer, affectionately known as “Whimp” and “Colonel” passed away at the age of 85 on Friday, September 4, 2026, at his home in West Branch, Michigan, with his family by his side.

Early Life and Service

Born in Edmore, Michigan, Gale grew up in the nearby town of Six Lakes. After graduating, he served in the U.S. Army as a Military Police Officer. While stationed at Fort Wayne in Detroit, he met his wife, Agnes and married shortly thereafter. He later joined the Michigan State Police, serving two years at the Erie Post before transferring to the West Branch Post, where he dedicated 25 years of service.

Life in West Branch

Gale loved the town of West Branch and built a full life there. On his 80 acres, he raised cows, chickens, ducks, rabbits, and horses. He especially enjoyed hunting with his beagles for rabbits, and he also spent time hunting ducks, pheasants, deer, elk, and, on one occasion, bear. Later in life, Gale loved his Kubota which gave him freedom and many adventures.

Family and Legacy

Gale was cherished by his closest friends in the West Branch community, but his greatest joy was his family. He was especially fond of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who held a special place in his heart.

Gale will be reunited in heaven with his wife, Agnes Marie Wymer; his son, Olin Christopher Wymer; his parents, Agnes (Outman) and Olin Wymer; his sister and brother-in-law, Janette (Wymer) and Wally McComb; and his brothers and sister-in-laws, Larry (Janice), Jack (LouAnn), and Toby Wymer.

He is survived by his eldest son, Doug (Sue) Wymer, daughters Robin (Jim Johnson) Wymer and Mary (Mark) Ostrander. Gale is also survived by 8 grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren: Robert Robbins (Madison), Lydia Robbins, Ryan (Mattie), Charlie and Bailey Coppens, Jenafer Ostrander, Ellee and Joel Parliament, Keri (Nick Riegle) Ostrander, Evelyn and Bently Riegle, Sara (Wymer) and Gary Rau, Melanie, Aubrey, Charles, Sawyer, and Gary Rau, Theresa Zettle, Dallas and Oliver Zettle, Kyle (Samantha) Wymer, Skyler, Everett, Elias and Feyra Wymer, and Diane (Wymer) and Josh Lehman, Katheryn and Sam Lehman.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Homes in West Branch, Michigan from 11am to 1pm followed by a luncheon.
