Heather Corene Kearns (née Bergwall), born August 22, 1972, passed away Saturday morning, April 18, 2026, surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy of generosity and deep devotion to the people and community she cherished most.
A graduate of Tawas Area High School, Heather continued her education at Ferris State University. She went on to become a member, and eventual president, of the West Branch-Rose City School Board. In that role, she was a passionate advocate for students and staff alike, earning the respect and affection of the entire school community.
Heather gave tirelessly of her time to Ogemaw Heights High School, where she could often be found selling popcorn and slushies with her signature energy and humor. She also coached middle school volleyball for 10 years. Through her volunteer efforts, she helped raise funds that supported important school initiatives and scholarships, leaving a lasting impact on countless students.
Behind the scenes, Heather was an active member of Faith Alive Church in West Branch. She taught pre-school children for many years, adding her flair with games and crafts. She led Vacation Bible School, cooked hundreds of meals for others, and served wherever there was a need. Faith Alive was stronger because of Heather, and the love and care she gave so freely will be deeply missed.
Above all else, Heather was devoted to her family. She shared a deep and enduring love with her husband, Bill Kearns. She found her greatest pride in being a mother to her two beloved children, Margaret and Matthew and held a special place in her heart for Margaret’s longtime girlfriend, Arden. Heather’s love for them was fierce and unwavering. She was their biggest supporter and loudest cheerleader.
Heather was the eldest daughter of Mike and Buzz Bergwall, and a loving sister to Angie Deerman (Chad Deerman) and Kerri Buyssens (Evan Buyssens). She was also a proud and beloved aunt to Lauren Tibbetts (Nick Tibbets), Jamen Deerman, Isabel Deerman, Max Buyssens, Harper Buyssens, Colin Kearns, Liam Kearns, Rynne Kearns, and Graeme Kearns. She adored each of them, and they adored her for her big heart, her fun spirit, and her unmatched ability to make any gathering more fun.
Heather embraced life with enthusiasm. She enjoyed knitting, golfing, cribbage, Westerns, birdwatching, and spending time with friends and family. She loved music, especially when it was played loud, and had a gift for bringing energy and excitement wherever she went. Simply put, Heather changed the atmosphere of a room just by walking into it.
To her family and to all who knew her, Heather was the heart and soul who held people together, a constant source of strength, laughter, and love. She will be remembered for her generosity, her humor, her spirited personality, and her remarkable ability to make everyone feel seen, valued, and welcomed. Her presence brought energy and warmth, and her absence leaves a space that cannot be filled.
