James Edward Schmitt passed away peacefully at his home in West Branch, MI on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on June 23, 1937, in West Branch, he dedicated his life to both his family and his career, becoming a respected business owner in the area.
On June 29, 1996, he married Diane Day in West Branch.
For 40 years, James owned and operated Schmitt Tire & Gas, a cornerstone of the West Branch community. His work ethic and commitment to quality service not only helped countless local residents but also fostered friendships and connections that spanned generations. James was well known for his ability to engage with customers, always sharing a friendly smile and a kind word as he provided assistance.
Beyond his professional life, James had a host of hobbies that enriched his personal life. As an avid deer hunter and fisherman, he embraced the outdoors, often found enjoying nature’s beauty. He also took great pleasure in gardening and spent many joyful moments making maple syrup alongside his nephew and many participants, creating not just a product but cherished memories.
James is survived by his loving wife, Diane Schmitt; daughter, Theresa Williams; stepchildren, Pauline (Tommy) King, Cindy (Jim) Glappa, Vikki Belanger, and Jimmy (Adriana) Belanger; as well as a remarkable legacy of 22 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Irene Schmitt; brother Tom Schmitt; sister Phyllis Ostrander; stepson Joey Belanger; son-in-law Rodger Williams; and brother-in-law Norris Day. Each of these relationships held a special place in James's heart, and he will be remembered fondly by all who knew and loved him.
James Edward Schmitt’s legacy is one of hard work, dedication, and love for family. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and the community he served with such commitment and warmth.
Visitation at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch will begin on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. until the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Campbell Corners Cemetery in West Branch. Chaplain Karen Orban will officiate.
