Joan Bernice Cummings

On Saturday, May 30, 2021, Joan B. Cummings (Norton) loving wife and mother of four, passed away at the age of 90. She lived in Prescott, MI for the past 20 years and was formerly of Clarkston, MI. She was born on November 21, 1930 to Ray and Wilma Norton. Joan married her childhood sweetheart, Roy Cummings on September 22, 1950. They shared 70 years of marriage and raised four children, Michael Roy Cummings (deceased), Kathleen JoAnn (Albert) Morris, Richard Collin Cummings and John Wesley (Lynn) Cummings.

Joan was a kind and generous wife and mother who always had an encouraging word and a warm smile. Her compassion and hospitality touched so many lives and her home was always a safe haven. She was an avid reader and loved doing many different crafts. She supported Rev. Roy Cummings as they followed their calling together.

Joan and Roy’s ministry took them all over the United States and Canada as she played the piano and Roy sang with the Lighthouse, Galilean and Camp Meeting quartet sharing the love of Jesus. As soon as they retired from traveling and singing, they began to work as pastors of the Melita Free Methodist Church and Turner Free Methodist for seven years. From there, they began serving in the Standish Free Methodist Church as music ministers. She was always encouraging and supportive in everything she did regarding ministry. All together Joan and Roy served in ministry for 70 years. Together they strived to live totally for God.

Joan is survived by children, Kathleen (Albert) Morris, Richard Cummings, and John (Lynn) Cummings; sister, Jeanette (Wendell) Cowdry; grandchildren, Rev. Lee (Jane) Cummings, Steven (Kristin) Cummings, Kimberly (Rob) Karp, Kristine (Eddie) Gavin, Katherine Morris, Kevin (Kelly) Morris, Neil (Kelly) Cummings, Mark (Cheyanne) Cummings, Tyler Cummings, Colleen (Chris) Harper and Sean Cummings; and blessed with many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Rev. Roy Cummings who passed away on October 3, 2020, son, Michael Roy Cummings who passed away on December 19, 2014, and siblings, Lillian Freeland and Charles Norton.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2021, at the Ogemaw Hills Free Methodist Church in West Branch at 12:00 p.m. with the funeral service starting at 1:00 p.m. Pastor David Kurtz and Rev. Lee Cummings will officiate. Burial will be held on Friday, June 4, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at the Ottawa Park Cemetery in Clarkston, MI.
