John Lewis Wooley, age 69, was born to James and Carol (Carter) Wooley on November 30, 1955, in St. Johns, MI and died in West Branch, MI on June 3, 2025. The family moved from Elsie to West Branch when John was a toddler.
John was very involved in scouting, and he loved to camp, canoe, and hunt from a young age. Like both his parents, he graduated from Michigan State University and loved cheering for his beloved Spartans.
John married Laura VonSteenburg in 1990 and became a much-loved member of her family. Together they owned and ran an embroidery and screen-printing business in New Smyrna Beach, FL. They loved Florida, boating, camping, and chasing lobsters in the Keys.
Upon retiring in 2017, they split their time between Florida and Michigan. After a while, John’s Parkinsons, which he had for many years, caused them to choose one place to live and they chose West Branch.
John was preceded in death by his parents and Laura’s mom, Myrna VonSteenburg.
He is survived by his wife, Laura, his brothers, James (Amy) Wooley of Indianola, IA and Rob Wooley of Au Gres, and Laura’s dad, Gordon VonSteenburg of West Branch. In addition, John leaves Laura’s siblings, Mike (Lynn) VonSteenburg of Indialantic, FL, Kathy (Dan) Lubelan of Johannesburg, Bethany (Tom) Petteway of New Smyrna Beach, FL, and Kurt VonSteenburg of West Branch. As well as many nieces and nephews that he dearly loved and was extremely proud of, Erin (Matt) Sharp of DesMoine, Keri (Nick) Rowe of Sarasota, Chris (Carmen) Wooley of DesMoine, Kristopher (Therese) VonSteenburg of New Fairfield, CT, Ryan (Carolyn) VonSteenburg of Wells, ME, Dan (Samantha) Lubelan of Johannesburg, Jon (Lindsey) VonSteenburg of Tampa, Kellen VonSteenburg of Saginaw and Griffin VonSteenburg of West Branch, his great nieces and great nephews, Rowan, Kamryn, Ava, Audrey, Chloe, Taylor, Brooke, Meredith, Gracie, Ellie, Maeve, Kaden, Danny, Boston, and James.
Per his wishes, cremation has taken place.
The family would like to thank the Horizon of West Branch and Compassus Hospice for their loving care of John.
