Kay Frances Shiel, age 80, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at My Michigan Medical Center in Saginaw. She was born in the Roscommon area on 20 August 1946 to Guy and Carmella Shiel. While she lived in several locations during her early years, she spent most of her youth living in the Keno area of Roscommon County.

Upon graduation from high school, she went on to attend Central Michigan University where she earned a master’s degree in Elementary Education. She began her lifelong career teaching elementary classes at first and then moved on to teaching pre-elementary classes in the federal Head Start program at several locations in northern Michigan. She spent most of her career in the Alcona County school district in Lincoln, Michigan. Kay was very loving of children, and she devoted all her life to caring for them in many ways including through public schools, Sunday schools, and just good will in general. In addition, she was always focused on her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Carmella Shiel, her brother Gary Shiel, her sister Ann (Gary) Church, and her sister Sue Hughes.

She is survived by her brother Don (An Sun) Shiel, brother-in-law Jerry Hughes, nephews and nieces Scott (Kelly), Graham (Melissa), and Clay (Ami) Church, Lisa (Nick), Matt (Stephanie), and Daniel Hughes, and Stephanie (William) and Donnie Shiel, and many great-nephews and nieces and one great-great-niece.

The funeral service will be held at the St. Helen Community Baptist Church on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Richardson Cemetery in Roscommon at 2:30 p.m. Pastor Ken Peterson will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Helen Community Baptist Church.
