Leslie Kempfer Jr.

Leslie “Les” Kempfer Jr., born on November 15, 1936, in Detroit, MI, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 20, 2026, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, MI, at the age of 89.

On May 1, 1965, he married Sherron Thurston in Troy, Michigan, where they lived before moving their family to St Helen, MI in 1973.

A true master of his craft, he began his journey in carpentry at the age of 16, working under E.C. Price Sr. in St. Clair Shores. He quickly earned a reputation for his meticulous attention to detail that would define his every project. For Les, carpentry was more than a trade; in 1989, he began his own construction business.

He served his country honorably in the Air Force National Guard from 1958 to 1961. He dedicated 14 years as a firefighter in Troy. Through these roles, Les generously gave his time and care, earning the respect of those around him.

Les loved deer hunting with his sons and family at the farm in Engadine, MI. He also enjoyed fishing, trapping, bowling, traveling, camping, and gardening. The time he spent outdoors with family and friends created many lasting memories that will be cherished forever.

He is survived by his wife, Sherrie Kempfer; they shared 61 years of marriage. His daughter Jill (Chuck) McPherson, his son Jason Kempfer, and his granddaughters, Madison and Molly McPherson. He is also survived by his sister Bonnie Roszak and brother Richard Pershinske, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Helen Kempfer and Fred and Elsie Pershinske; his son, Leslie T. Kempfer; his brother, Tom and sister-in-law Fran Kempfer; his sister, Nancy Norberg; his brother-in-law Ron Roszak and his sister-in-law Jan Pershinske.

Cremation has taken place.

A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in St. Helen from 4-7 p.m.
