Mary Lu Lockhart

November 10, 1946 – September 3, 2026

November tenth in 1946
Mary Luallyn Schwarz made her way
With bright eyes and dark hair,
For Allan and Lucile a truly special day.

Danville, Kentucky is where she grew
Into an inquisitive child
Who loved to try anything new
Sometimes crazy and wild.

Her love for education
Was fostered in Naperville, Illinois;
Followed by the cold of Marquette
Then the University of Michigan provided graduation joy.

Her Michigan English teacher calling
In Birmingham and Utica
Came to an end in 1968
When from flea markets and sales she’d be hauling.

Sherred became her last name
For several busy years.
After Tom Sherred’s death,
Larry Lockhart calmed her tears.

From New Baltimore to West Branch
Larry and his “Queen” shared their lives.
Welcoming relatives and friends.
Their generosity still survives.

Mary Lu was devoted to antiques.
Political concerns, and history were always in her reach.
Animal protection, civic causes, and Questers
Were ways she continued to teach.

A soul with a giving heart,
Her infectious humor from memories will never depart!

Mary Lu was preceded in death by her husband, Larry, parents Dr. Allan and Lucile Schwarz and Russell and Winifred Lockhart, brothers-in-law James (Betty) and John, stepsons Gary and Todd Hines. She will be deeply missed by all her myriads of relatives and friends across the country.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Rea Animal Shelter, 1367 M-33, West Branch, MI 48661.
