Merwyn "Merv" Curtis Hirsch

Merwyn “Merv” Hirsch, 85, of St. Helen, Michigan, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories and a family who loved him dearly.

Born on September 5, 1940, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Vincent and Mavis Hirsch, Merv was a man who believed in hard work, family, and enjoying life’s simple pleasures. He spent many dedicated years as a pipefitter at General Motors, taking great pride in his work and providing for those he loved.

While Merv worked hard, he also knew how to enjoy life. Some of his happiest days were spent out on the water with family and friends, relaxing on the boat with a Miller High Life in hand. He had a passion for oil painting and found joy in creating artwork that reflected his appreciation for the world around him. He loved to laugh, tell stories, and spend time with the people who meant the most to him. His quick wit, generous heart, and easygoing nature made him someone others naturally gravitated toward.

Above all else, Merv was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 64 years, Carol Hirsch; his daughter, Cheryl Holtz; his son, Merwyn “Merv” Hirsch Jr. and daughter-in-law, Kelle Hirsch; his granddaughter, Kristina Mellentine and her husband, Harley Mellentine; his grandson, Zackary Holtz and his wife, Samantha Holtz; his granddaughter, adopted through love, Makenzie Walters; his treasured great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Sonny, and Charlotte Mellentine, and Colston Walters; his beloved dog, Charlie, who was a constant companion; along with many dear friends who were blessed to know him.

Merv was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Mavis Hirsch.

Although our hearts are broken, we are grateful for the countless memories Merv gave us. We will remember his laughter echoing across the lake, the stories he loved to tell, the paintings he created, and the unconditional love he shared with his family. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of everyone whose life he touched.
