Philip Harold Shaw passed away at home surrounded by his family on July 10, 2023, following a short battle with heart disease. He was born on March 9, 1943, the youngest of 5 children of Ruth and Harold Shaw in Carson City, Michigan.
He graduated from Sheridan High School and Michigan State University. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served a tour of duty in Vietnam 1967-1968. He was swept off his feet by Carol VandenHeuvel in 1969 and married her the same year.
His greatest pride was in his sons and daughters-in-law, Nathan and Jennifer Shaw of Columbus Ohio, Andrew and Marta Shaw of Harrison, Michigan, Ryan and Katherine Shaw of Fenwick, Michigan. His greatest joy was spending time with his fifteen grandchildren - Rinnah, Rachel, Toby, Noah, Ethan, Anna, Olin, Disa, Eliza, Oskar, Lena, Otto, Ava, Isaac, and Allison.
He was an active volunteer for the United Methodist Church, the Optimist Club, the Red Cross Road to Recovery, the Timbers Flying Club, the Experimental Aircraft Association, the Bigfoot Committee of West Branch, the Summer Music Series, Ogemaw Hills Pathways, and the Jam Dandies. When his sons were young, he taught Sunday School, led the youth group, coached minor league baseball, and worked with the Cub Scouts. He worked on many mission trips to Kentucky, Mexico, and Costa Rica.
He had many interests including fishing, hunting, flying, camping, bigfooting and traveling with Carol from Alaska to Costa Rica, Europe to Japan.
He is predeceased by his parents, brother Richard Shaw, in-laws Linda Shaw, Ted Edwards, Marilyn Shaw, and Betty Shaw.
In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, Philip is survived by his siblings Robert Shaw, Judy Edwards, and James Shaw, by his in-laws Shirley Shaw, Gary VandenHeuvel, and Lee and Sheri DeYoung.
He lived a full and blessed life and will be missed by many.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers or memorial gifts, you spend that extra time and money with your loved ones.
The funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 16, 2023, at First United Methodist Church in West Branch at 4:00 p.m. with visitation starting at 3:00 p.m. Pastor Michelle Forsyth will officiate. Burial will take place at Clear Lake Cemetery in Fenwick, MI.
