West Branch, MI

Ronald Roy Smith, of West Branch, Michigan, passed away on October 4, 2026, at his home. He was 86. He was born on January 10, 1940, in Flint, Michigan, to Verling Floyd and Beulah Elizabeth (McLincha) Smith.

Ronald lived a life marked by hard work, service, skill, and a genuine ease with people. He was a member of the first graduating class after Kearsley High School was built, a distinction that remained part of his story. He went on to serve his country in the United States Navy as a Seaman, and that spirit of dedication continued throughout his working years. Ronald worked in security for General Motors and later for Kettering University.

He was a man who loved the simple things like Cherry Coke. He also enjoyed cars and hunting, and he took special pride in the things he could build with his own hands. Among his proudest accomplishments was creating a replica of the Herbie Volkswagen car fitted with a Merlin jet engine, a remarkable project that earned him many trophies. He also did all of the excavating and preparation work for the house that he and his family built, reflecting both his determination and his practical talents.

Ronald was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed the Detroit Lions and watching the Tigers games. He also was a fan of the University of Michigan and western movies.

Those who knew Ronald will remember his outgoing nature and his gift for conversation. He never met a stranger he couldn’t talk to, making others feel welcome with his easy way and friendly spirit.

Above all, Ronald will be remembered by the family who shared in his life and love. He is survived by his wife, Louise D. Smith; his son, Ty Smith, and Ty’s wife, Andrea; and his daughter, Jenelle Smith. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Gabrielle and Meghan. He is further survived by his stepdaughters, Joyce and her husband Garry, Sandie, JoAnn, and Marilyn and her husband Bud. Ronald is also survived by his brothers, Verling Smith and his wife Shirley, and Kim Allen and his wife Debbie, along with many nieces and nephews who will remember him with affection.

He was preceded in death by baby girl Smith, his parents, Verling Smith and Beulah Allen, and by his brother, Tary Allen, and Tary’s wife, Julie.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at a later time at Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Road, Holly, Michigan 48442.
