Virgil P. Curtis

August 11, 1936 — June 2, 2009

Virgil P. Curtis, age 72 of West Branch, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Bay Regional Medical Center. He was drafted into the U.S. Navy and served 2 years. Virgil volunteered as an umpire for Surline Middle School softball for many years. He sponsored a bowling league for 20 years too. He donated to many West Branch public projects including the 3rd Street water fountain and the original dugouts at Ogemaw Heights High School. Virgil owned and developed Hillcrest Subdivision as well as built many commercial and residential buildings. He was an avid fisherman and shared ownership in a Canadian Cabin and claimed that BAD JOHN cheated on the last euchre game. Virgil was a member of the National Fishing Lure Collector Club (NFLCC) for the last 10 years and also bought and sold on Ebay. Survivors include his wife Jeannie Curtis of West Branch, children, Elizabeth (Robert) Steinhurst, Gail (Troy) Brown and Gina (Joshua) Rosebrugh all of West Branch and Molly (Ronald) Tschirhart of Troy, 10 grandchildren and he helped raise his brother in law, Daniel “Gus” Robson of Platteville, CO. Also surviving are his sisters, Dorothy Clayton, Geraldine Oliver and Mary Lucas all of West Branch and Betty Coleman of Washington and his brother David Curtis of West Branch and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his 4 brothers, Glen, Leith, Carl and George Curtis. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in West Branch. Rev. Mary Lynch will officiate. Memorial Contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Pastor Discretionary Fund, the Ogemaw County Clergy Fund (Food Pantry/Good Samaritan) or to the Alumni Scholarship Fund (Part of the Community Foundation).
